The body left Houston Tx, on the 30th of August for Lagos accompanied by his widow Mrs. Pauline Egbuna and his 3 sons Nonso, Chidozie and Lotanna. The flight had a 4 hour layover in Washington DC, there his eldest son Onyekachi joined the rest of the family from San Francisco for the journey.
Mr Charles was a soldier, 2 of his 5 children served in the US military (USMC and US Navy), while in Washington the family members captured historic military installments and processes such as the changing of guard at the tomb of the unknown solder, the Iwo Jima memorial, the Pentagon, the Whitehouse, the congress etc.
The journey across the Atlantic began in earnest at 6pm ET from Dulles international airport in Washington DC. On our way to Nigeria we were seated in the Polaris class, a step above the business class, ironically Nonso whose flight benefits made it possible for us to travel to Nigeria at a reasonable cost was relegated to the business class while we enjoyed the Polaris where one can actually stretch out, sleep, watch movies and drink all night if you wanted.
The flight took almost 12 hours, we landed in Murtala Mohamed airport in Lagos at 10:00 am. The original plan was for Onyii and Dodo to quickly clear immigration and proceed to meet the funeral home company who would provide ground transportation to Nnewi, Anambra state possibly the same day. However, due to the delays in releasing the corps, inadequate communication, bad road we ended missing our flight to the east on Wednesday so we booked and stayed at hotel near the airport till the new morning Thursday.
The funeral home however, started transporting the body to Nnewi the same Wednesday but halfway in Benin the driver notified us that he will not be able to make it to the east that night due to how dangerous the journey is at night, and he decided to spend a night there. He continued the next morning and successfully reached Nnewi before our flight could make it to Asaba. Our dad was laid-instate at the ground floor of our main home (still in construction) while we made our way from Asaba airport to the compound
